A shocking incident at Chipinge District Hospital in Zimbabwe has left a mother, Cynthia Masocha, devastated after giving birth to a baby boy, only to discover the next day that the child had been swapped with a baby girl.
The event, which occurred on September 21, 2024, has prompted an urgent investigation by both police and hospital authorities.
Masocha, who was assisted by midwife Blessing Mutimbu during the birth, confirmed the baby’s sex as male immediately after delivery.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I checked the nappies.
I was sure I had a son, and the hospital records confirmed it,” she said, expressing her disbelief.
However, upon waking the following morning, she found that her baby had inexplicably been swapped with a girl.
Hospital records confirmed she had indeed given birth to a boy, intensifying the mystery.
Meanwhile, hospital officials, in coordination with the police, are conducting DNA tests on all parties involved to determine how the mix-up occurred.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, emphasized that investigations are ongoing, stating,
“DNA tests will be conducted to clarify the truth behind this disturbing incident.”
This case highlights the importance of vigilance in healthcare institutions and calls for better safeguards to prevent similar occurrences.
