One of the gunmen involved in the murder of rapper Young Dolph has admitted that he committed the crime on his daughter’s birthday to earn money for her celebration.
Cornelius Smith, who pleaded guilty to the 2021 killing of Young Dolph, testified this week, revealing that he carried out the murder in hopes of receiving a large payout.
Smith explained that he was desperate to make his daughter’s birthday special, leading him to accept the hit.
“Man, I was trying to make it right for her,” Smith said on the stand.
“I don’t have any money; I’m trying to get some money that day.
So I’m trying to make sure my baby girl has a beautiful birthday.”
Smith testified that the murder plot, organized by Hernandez “Quett” Govan and financed by Anthony “Big Jook” Mims, promised him $40,000.
However, Smith ultimately received only $800.
Furthermore, Smith stated that guilt overwhelmed him after his arrest, which led him to confess.
“I’m going to jail anyway. I can get it off my chest,” he said.
“It’s my best to be honest and truthful. Why play with these folks? They already know.”
The testimony sheds light on the tragic circumstances surrounding the murder, reflecting a misguided attempt to fulfill parental duties through criminal means.
