Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been rushed from a New York jail to Bellevue Hospital for emergency heart surgery due to ongoing medical issues that have not been fully detailed.
His representatives, Craig Rothfeld and Juda Engelmayer, confirmed the procedure but refrained from sharing further details.
Weinstein, 72, is facing multiple legal challenges, including the possibility of a retrial on sexual assault charges in New York later this year.
Weinstein’s health has been deteriorating during his incarceration, where he is serving a 23-year sentence for rape following his 2020 conviction, a milestone in the #MeToo movement.
The former producer’s legal troubles are far from over, with a possible retrial in New York and a separate conviction in Los Angeles, where he was sentenced to 16 years for assaulting an actress, which led to his imprisonment.
His representatives expressed gratitude to the New York City Department of Correction for swiftly transferring him to the hospital regardless of his crime, stating,
“Mr. Weinstein suffers a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment.”
Weinstein has maintained his innocence, denying any non-consensual sexual encounters before the current situation.
In spite of his legal and health troubles, the disgraced producer faces continued scrutiny and court proceedings, while those who once admired him are left disillusioned by the revelations of his misconduct that have been disclosed.
